Description

Goundal Baekja is a 52% ABV omija-based spirit from Gyeongsangbuk-do that pushes proof without sacrificing drinkability. Mungyeong omija (five-flavor berry) is the defining ingredient, and its name proves apt here — the spirit genuinely moves through sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and pungent impressions in a single sip. The nose is vivid and lifted: bright red berry tartness, a floral-herbal complexity, and an underlying warmth that signals the high proof. On the palate, the body is medium with a surprisingly smooth entry for 52%. The omija's tart acidity arrives first, sharp and clean like cranberry, followed by a wave of gentle sweetness and a subtle herbal bitterness that anchors the mid-palate. The pungent, almost peppery quality emerges in the back, creating a layered progression that few single-ingredient spirits can match. The finish is exceptionally long, warming and persistent, with omija tartness and a clean, drying close. At 500ml and high proof, this rewards careful, measured pours.
