Description

Gayagok Wangju is a 13% ABV fruit-infused rice wine from Chungcheongnam-do, crafted under the guidance of Traditional Food Master No. 13, Nam Sang-ran, at Minsokju Wangju Brewery. The botanical complexity here is striking - wild chrysanthemum, goji berry, omija, pine needles, and plum are layered over a rice base, each contributing a distinct aromatic thread without crowding the others. The nose opens with chrysanthemum florals and a forest-floor pine note, followed by tart omija berry and a dried-plum sweetness. On the palate, the body is medium with a surprisingly polished texture for a multi-botanical brew. The fruity brightness of omija and plum leads the attack, then gives way to a resinous, piney midpalate that lends seriousness. The goji berry adds a subtle earthy warmth underneath. The finish is long and aromatic, drying gently with chrysanthemum bitterness and pine needle astringency. Serve at 10-13°C with jeon (Korean pancakes) where the oil-crunch contrast meets the botanical complexity, or alongside a light cheese plate where the pine and floral notes create an unexpected but satisfying pairing.
