강주
Gangju is a 50% ABV rice soju from Chungcheongnam-do, distilled simply from Korean rice and purified water. At 50%, this is among the most powerful Korean rice spirits — a minimalist expression where only two ingredients must produce all the character. The absence of nuruk in the listed ingredients suggests either a modern enzymatic approach or that nuruk is considered part of the rice preparation. Regardless, the result is a spirit of remarkable purity and intensity. The nose is concentrated and direct — distilled rice at full force, with warm grain sweetness, a clean mineral edge, and a faint alcohol prickle that signals the proof. On the palate, the body is medium-full with a dense, slightly viscous texture. The rice character is amplified to its maximum: warm, clean, and intensely grain-forward, with a sweetness that is structural rather than sugary. The 50% proof creates a firm, architectural framework — this is a spirit with backbone and authority. Despite the strength, there is no harshness; the distillation is clean. A subtle warmth builds steadily through the mid-palate. The finish is very long, powerfully warming, with persistent rice essence and a dry, mineral close. The small 200ml bottle reflects the spirit's concentration. Serve in small portions neat at room temperature, alongside strongly flavored Korean dishes like gopchang-gui, aged doenjang-based preparations, or rich stews where the spirit's authority can match bold flavors.
