장수 생막걸리
Jangsu Fresh Makgeolli is one of Korea's most widely distributed makgeolli brands, brewed by Seoul Jangsu Brewery (factory in Chungcheongbuk-do) at a crowd-friendly 6% ABV. What sets it apart from the hundreds of similar 6% bottles on convenience store shelves is the addition of red ginseng powder (hongsam bunmal), which adds a mild earthy-bitter note underneath the expected creamy sweetness. Malto-oligosaccharide handles the sweetening, giving a slightly less sharp sugar curve than pure corn syrup. The 2019 Korea Woorisool Quality Award (Excellent, takju category) and 2020 Korea Liquor Awards Grand Prize validate what volume sales already suggest: this bottle hits a reliable sweet spot between accessibility and character. On the nose, there is a faint herbal-root warmth beneath the standard makgeolli milkiness. The ginseng does not dominate — it whispers. The palate is smooth with medium creaminess, and the finish has a clean release with a trace of mineral earthiness from the ginseng. Pair with pajeon for a classic combination, or with raw fish (hoe) where the ginseng's warmth adds an interesting dimension against cold, clean slices.
