Korean Makgeolli

In Fresh Makgeolli

인생막걸리

Seoul Jangsu's production facility in Jincheon, Chungcheongbuk-do uses puffed rice and puffed wheat flour for this 5% modern makgeolli — one of the lightest expressions in the lineup. The aroma is toasted cereal and malt syrup with a whiff of caramel corn. On the palate, the body is notably soft and airy, with a straightforward sweetness supported by maltooligosaccharide and a creamy flow that barely registers as alcoholic. The finish is very short and clean. Serve ice-cold at 3-5°C as a refreshing starter. Pairs with corn dogs (hot dogs on sticks) or cheese tteokbokki for a fun, casual Korean street-food moment. An ideal gateway for makgeolli newcomers.

Janghongsam Jangsu Makgeolli

장홍삼 장수 막걸리

Seoul Jangsu's facility in Jincheon, Chungcheongbuk-do creates this distinctive 6% makgeolli by blending white rice fermentation with red ginseng (hongsam) powder — a pairing that earned the top prize at the 2016 Korea Traditional Liquor Quality Awards (sterilized makgeolli category). The aroma opens with earthy ginseng root, warm honey, and a background of soft rice cream. On the palate, the body is medium and creamy with a sweet front that transitions into a gentle bitter-herbal mid-palate from the red ginseng. The finish is warming and lightly medicinal in the best sense, with lingering ginseng root depth. Serve at 8-10°C. Pairs beautifully with samgyetang ginseng chicken soup for a thematic double-ginseng experience, or with rich eel-gui where the warming ginseng note complements the fatty fish.
