Yedameun Hansan Sogokju

예담은 한산소곡주

Hansan Yedameun Sogokju Brewery in Chungcheongnam-do upholds the centuries-old Hansansogokju tradition with this 16% ABV expression. The grain bill pairs glutinous rice with regular rice, while nuruk, soybeans, and gujeolcho (wild chrysanthemum) add fermentation depth and a distinctive herbal finish. At this strength the body carries real weight — expect a viscous, almost oil-like texture — yet the wild chrysanthemum introduces an unexpected lightness in the aroma, like dried wildflowers pressed in a book. The 2018 Korea Woorisool Top Prize in Yakcheongju is the highest modern validation of this heritage style. Serve at 12-16°C with kkotge-tang (blue crab stew) where the herbal complexity matches the briny sweetness, or with pyeonyuk (pressed meat slices) for a refined banchan pairing.

Hansan Yedameun Hansan Sogok Hwaju

한산예담은 한산소곡화주

Hansanyedameun Hansan Sogokhwaju is a 41% ABV distilled spirit from Chungcheongnam-do, following the traditional Sogokhwa method but incorporating an unusually rich botanical palette: glutinous rice, non-glutinous rice, nuruk, soybean, and gujeolcho (Chrysanthemum zawadskii, a wild mountain chrysanthemum). This expanded ingredient list creates a spirit of uncommon aromatic depth. The soybean adds a subtle nutty, savory undertone, while gujeolcho contributes a distinctive herbal-floral note that anchors the spirit's personality and distinguishes it from simpler grain distillates. The nose is layered and intriguing — toasted grain, dried wildflower, roasted soybean, and a warm herbal warmth. On the palate, the body is medium with a smooth, clean texture. The 41% ABV integrates well, delivering warmth without harshness. The mid-palate reveals the spirit's complexity: grain sweetness, then a nutty-savory turn, then the gujeolcho's herbaceous lift in the finish. The finish is long and aromatic, with lingering herbal warmth and a clean close. Recognized with a commendation in the distilled category at the 2016 Korea Traditional Liquor Awards. Bottled at 500ml. Serve neat at room temperature or slightly warmed, with raw fish, galbi, or bossam.
