Homo Ludens borrows its name from Johan Huizinga's cultural theory about play as the foundation of civilization — an ambitious reference for a 12% rice brew from Gangwon-do's Sansu Brewery. The ingredient list is deliberately spare: domestic rice, nuruk, and purified water, nothing else. This minimalism pushes all the flavor expression onto the fermentation itself. The result is a surprisingly clear, almost translucent pour for a traditional brew of this strength, suggesting careful filtering or a very clean fermentation. The aroma is polished rice grain with a whiff of melon rind and wet stone. On the palate, the first impression is smoothness — the 12% alcohol is integrated rather than aggressive, warming the throat without burning. The mid-palate shows a delicate grain sweetness balanced by a mineral-like dryness that keeps the finish lean. Compared to thick, coated takju at the same ABV, Homo Ludens prioritizes transparency and precision. Pair with banchan-heavy spreads where the drink's neutrality lets each side dish shine individually, or with grilled meats like samgyeopsal where the alcohol's warmth mirrors the grill's heat.
