Gamhongro is a 40% ABV aromatic soju from Gyeonggi-do, crafted using rice as the distillation base with an elaborate botanical bill that includes cinnamon, ginger, clove, citrus peel (jinpi), licorice, jicho (lithospermum root), longan flesh (yongannyuk), and millet (jo) and sorghum (susu). This spirit belongs to the tradition of Korean medicinal spirits (yakju/hongju) where multiple botanicals are layered to create a complex, perfumed drinking experience. The jicho root gives the distinctive red color that defines hongro-style spirits, while the combination of warming spices and sweet botanicals creates an aromatic depth that unfolds gradually across each sip.
