Korean Fruit Wine

Na Wine

나 와인

Na Wine is a 10% ABV fruit-categorized wine from Gyeongsangbuk-do made with 100% Korean glutinous rice (chapssal), an unusual proposition for a product positioned as wine rather than traditional rice wine (cheongju or yakju). The glutinous rice — higher in amylopectin starch than regular rice — ferments into a sweeter, more viscous liquid with a naturally rounder mouthfeel, and the resulting product expresses soft fruit-like aromatics despite containing no actual fruit. This phenomenon occurs because certain yeast-driven ester compounds produced during glutinous rice fermentation mimic fruity notes, particularly banana-like isoamyl acetate and apple-like ethyl hexanoate. The 500ml bottle and 10% ABV place it in a dessert-wine or aperitif category, where its sweetness and aromatic complexity serve as the main attraction. A 2010 Korea Traditional Liquor Awards prize recognized the product's originality in reframing a purely grain-based fermentation as a wine-like drinking experience.
