Memillo

메밀로

Me-Wheatro (Memillo) is a 45% ABV distilled spirit from Gangwon-do, built on a distinctive base of domestic rice, buckwheat, nuruk, and purified water. Buckwheat is a signature crop of the Gangwon region — think of the province's famous memil-guksu (buckwheat noodles) — and its inclusion here gives the spirit a character that no rice-only soju can replicate. The buckwheat adds a nutty, earthy dimension that interweaves with the rice's smoother sweetness. The nose opens with roasted buckwheat groats, warm toasted grain, a subtle honey note, and an underlying earthiness from the nuruk. On the palate, the body is medium-full with a textured, slightly grainy mouthfeel that reflects the buckwheat's nature. The rice provides a warm, sweet foundation, while the buckwheat layers in its distinctive nutty bitterness — similar to the flavor of dark buckwheat tea. Nuruk adds fermentation depth with a hint of its characteristic tangy complexity. At 45%, the spirit is robust but well-balanced. The finish is long and warming, with roasted buckwheat lingering alongside earthy grain and a clean, dry close. The 500ml bottle is generous for a high-proof artisanal spirit. Serve neat at room temperature with buckwheat noodle dishes for a regional pairing, alongside grilled meats, or with savory appetizers like jeon where the spirit's nutty grain character complements the crispy batter.
