Korean Fruit Wine

Ogapi Wine

오가피와인

Ogapi Wine is a 12% ABV fruit wine from Geumisan Nongwon Brewery in Sejong, made from domestic ogapi berries (Eleutherococcus sessiliflorus) — a wild botanical in the ginseng family prized in Korean herbal traditions for its woody, slightly bitter profile. This is a genuinely uncommon base ingredient for winemaking, and it produces a flavor profile that sits well outside the grape-or-berry mainstream. The nose opens with dried herb and a faintly medicinal wild-berry note that is more intriguing than off-putting. On the palate, the body is light-medium with a soft texture. The sweetness is moderate, measured with white sugar and balanced by the ogapi berry's natural astringency, which introduces a tannic grip in the midpalate. The finish is clean and moderately long, with a lingering herbal dryness. Serve at 10-13°C with mild cheeses where the unusual herbal-fruit character becomes a conversation starter, alongside light starters where its distinctive profile adds dimension, or with fruit tarts where the ogapi's wild edge provides contrast to pastry sweetness.
